But you, Lord, are a shield around me, my glory, and the one who lifts up my head. Psalm 3:3 CSB
I noticed them in line at the cafeteria. Mom held her beautiful little girl in her arms as she chose food for them both and pushed their tray down the metal railing. My husband and I were several diners ahead. I chose my light dinner, occasionally glancing back to see the little angel with blonde curls pointing at the food behind the glass divide. We got through the line, payed and sat down, only to continue our deep conversation about some seemingly insurmountable troubles. My heart was heavy and eating was the last thing on my mind.
The woman with the little girl had set the precious toddler down in order to carry their tray to a table. As they walked past, the little girl stopped at our table, made eye contact with me, and laid her curly head down on the bench seat in a loving gesture like she was trying to lay her head in my lap. I gently touched her curls as her mom called out to her. Her mother and I exchanged smiles as the little one scampered off to catch up.
My heart melted as I felt God’s touch in the little wink I’d just experienced. A warmth surrounded me. My breathing slowed, and I enjoyed my dinner.
Thank You, Father, for sending me little hugs, and in doing so, You lift my head to carry on. I love how each of us experience Your grace in different ways. Amen.
