In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.  Genesis 1:1 CSB

One Sunday, our music minister introduced our congregation to a new song, Canvas and Clay by Pat Barrett. I was brought to tears singing about God being an artist and a potter and me being His canvas and clay. I thought I needed permission and confirmation to even think of myself as an artist, a writer. Did I even dare say the words? In our society, art seems to be unimportant unless you are deemed worthy of critical acclaim. And to wait until you are a senior citizen—that’s the icing on the pity-party cake. I forgot…God is the ultimate artist. From, In the beginning, to designing Noah’s ark, to designing the Ark of the Covenant, and the rebuilding of Jerusalem, God’s artistry is unfathomable. Psalm 19:1 says, “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the expanse proclaims the work of his hands(CSB). God also gives gifts in the arts to His children. Art is important to God, even less-than-stellar works. I have to remind myself that I am wonderfully made and I am to be a light in this world, to “let (my) light shine before others so that they may see (my) good works and give glory to (my) Father in heaven;” Matthew 5:16 (CSB). What a beautiful reminder that God intends for me to use my gift and in doing so, I honor Him.

What gift has He given you? Are you using it to help build His kingdom? 1 Timothy 4:14 tells us, “Don’t neglect the gift that is in you…”(CSB).  1 Peter 4:10 says, “Just as each one has received a gift, use it to serve others, as good stewards of the varied grace of God,” (CSB).

I praise God for this new song in my heart, one of acceptance and grace.

Father, You are the artist of my soul. Please mold me and paint on my heart Your will. Thank You for the beauty in this world and for giving me a heart to appreciate it.

Love, Your human fellow artist.
